Online Learning Environment
With today's technology, learning has no boundaries.
UHM SEED Academy at Kapolei High School puts today's technology to work for you so your online classroom experience is engaging, interactive, and fun! UHM SEED Academy online courses (all non-STEM electives) are comprised of the course curriculum and teacher instruction, all accessed via your internet-enabled computer. Additional support is provided through regular contact with teachers and academic advisors.
Curriculum:
- All online courses utilize multimedia and interactivity to make learning engaging and foster comprehension. Each course takes you step by step through a series of lessons and assignments using vivid graphics, dynamic Adobe® Flash® demonstrations, and clear, crisp audio.
- Many courses include online discussion forums and other opportunities to interact with students and teachers.
- Study is self-guided — you can learn and take tests at your own pace, and difficult lessons can be repeated as needed.
Instruction
- All UHM SEED Academy core courses are taught by highly qualified instructors who are degreed in the subjects they teach.
- Every class includes teacher-graded assignments that are returned within 72 hours of submission.
- Teachers provide weekly online instruction for each course via Elluminate® — an interactive web conferencing environment. Sessions are taped, for convenient on-demand playback.
- Whenever students have questions, they can contact their teacher either by email, chat, or a local phone number. Teachers respond to student requests within 24 hours.
Technology
- Course content is accessed directly through Blackboard, a secure, online student classroom environment. Blackboard provides:
- Password-protected access to all computer-based course material
- Flexible navigation making it quick and easy to move from course to course
- Standard tools so all courses have a similar look and feel
- Ability for students to submit assignments, view corrected assignments, check grades, and communicate with classmates and teachers
- Every full-time UHM SEED Academy student receives a loaner computer* loaded with the latest software, in addition to an internet service discount. Your complete computer equipment and supply list includes:
- Built-in wireless connectivity
- High-speed internet capable connections
- Virus protection software and filters to protect students from inappropriate content on the internet
- All course materials, including applicable textbooks and learning guides
Support
At UHM SEED Academy, support is only a phone call away.
- Students and teachers interact regularly through email, online discussions, chat, and real-time online tutoring sessions.
- A professional school counselor is available to help students select their courses, and address their academic, personal/social and career development needs.
- Support for parents is provided via weekly progress reports and a parent observer account where they can monitor student performance and activity.
* A non-refundable computer insurance fee of $50 each is due at orientation.
